Your senior year in High School is a milestone in life and it only happens once. That’s why it’s so important for you to documented this time with professional senior portraits. Senior portraits don’t have to look like all your classmates senior pictures taken by the school contract photographer. Your senior portraits can be a fun, individual experience that expresses your style and who you are.

At Scott Russell Photography we give you choices. We also try hard to make your senior portrait experience one that you’ll always remember!

Because this is a special time in your life there are a lot of questions about high school senior pictures and portraits along with several myths that may be floating around out there.

I’d like to take this time to go over some of those questions and dispel any myths you may have heard.

Myth #1: I have to use the high school contract photographer for my senior pictures.

Truth: While it’s true that many schools require you have to have your “YEARBOOK” photos taken by the schools contract photography studio, you are not required to purchase anything from them. Not even the expensive folio they send you months after your session. Oh and by the way, who wants an old looking folio like that anyway? That’s sooooo like your parents high school photos.

This has got to be the biggest myth I’ve heard about senior photos so keep in mind, the contract studio will try and suck you in to purchase all their high price products. Don’t fall for it and don’t accept assembly line cookie cutter photos out of convenience. You have a choice and that choice it to choose whomever you like to document this special time in your life.

Myth #2: My senior portraits will look like everyone else.

Truth: This is only true if you choose to have your senior picture done by the school contract studio. But if you choose a custom photographer like me, you’ll get fun, fashion, trendy and unique photos. Why? See the next myth…

Myth #3: Senior portraits are dull, boring and not fun!

Truth: Remember all those old photos of when your parents were in high school? These are not your parents senior portraits! Why, because I work hard at making this experience unique and all about you.

Before we go out on your photo shoot we sit down and talk about what you like and the interests you have. We’ll talk about locations, clothing and cool lighting techniques we can use in the studio or on-location.

Do you have a cool car? Maybe we take some photos of you and your car. Do you like those high fashion photo shoots you see on popular TV shows? Then maybe we do some in-studio shots and make you look like a high fashion model.

The sky’s the limit and I’m here for you, to make you look your best and to give you an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Myth #4: Senior portraits are expensive.

Truth: I’m not going to lie to you and tell you custom photography is inexpensive because it’s not. But I can tell you that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get quality photos. It really all depends on what you buy. I’m not going to pressure you with sales tactics and expect you purchase the most expensive products I offer.

Hopefully you’ll enjoy the experience, love your photos and want to invest in something that will last for years. Something that will bring you memories of this special time and that you’ll be able to show your family for years to come.

Myth #4: I have to look like a model to have nice photos.

Truth: Absolutely not true!! Every person is different and that’s what makes you, you! Everyone is beautiful in their own way and that’s the truth! It’s my job as a photographer to expose that beauty and bring it to life in your photographs.

I’m sure I’ve missed some questions and perhaps some “myths” but if I were looking for senior photos these are some of my own questions I’d ask.

I hope this has helped you and if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I love talking photography and love taking photos!

I’ve been using the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 beta for about 8 months now. In that time I’ve created several different watermark presets but have not really had time to manage those watermarks. Now that the final release version is available, I’ve updated and installed the final version and deleted all beta version.

The nice thing I found out was that all my watermark presets transferred over to the final release version which was super nice. The only problem now was that I needed to do a little house cleaning and delete some of the watermark presets I created.

Here in-lies the problem… or at least I thought it was… continue on…

I don’t know if it’s just me but removing or deleting a watermark preset is not overly obvious in Lightroom. There are no delete buttons, you can’t ‘option’ click ‘OK’ to reset or anything like that. So what’s a person to do when they can’t figure something out on their own? Google!!

So I found a few forum threads talking about watermark presets but nothing particular to deleting them. So I posted a new thread on the NAPP forum, since I’m a member and rarely post anything. Several very nice people replied and told me that you have to select the watermark from the drop down menu, don’t change anything and then go back to the drop down menu and you’ll see either ‘delete’ or ‘rename’ options at the bottom of the menu…. not me of course!

So for me, if I go to Edit Watermarks… and drop down the menu to select a watermark, for this example the ‘SRP Nameplate’ watermark…

The watermark would display with the word (edited) in the drop down menu (like below), even though I did nothing but select it.

At this point my friends on the forums were saying that if I go back to the drop down menu that I’d see the option at the bottom of the list to delete the preset… not me, this is what I have… the only option is to ‘Update’ which I don’t want…

Well at least I didn’t think I wanted to ‘Update’ the preset when in all reality, that was the option I should have chosen. For some reason, and I’m thinking beta software, when I selected a preset the watermark preset manager thought the preset had been edited… well no kidding, it even told me that. So after selecting Update Preset, the Watermark editor looks like this… notice… no (edited) after the preset name.

So now, if you go back into the drop down list you will have a couple new options… one, Delete and the other, Rename. Awesome!!

Like I’ve said earlier, this was not obvious to me and I think the Watermark Editor needs a little work in making the process of deleting and renaming watermark presets easier… but then again, I should have found this while “testing” the beta… right?

My goal in writing this is to provide a little piece of information to an issue that was driving me nuts to others in case anyone runs into the same problem and can’t find the solution in a Google search.

One of the new features of Adobe Photoshop CS5 is the addition of Content-Aware to the Fill dialog box. This a an awesome new feature and makes cleaning up areas in photograph really easy. Plus, it does a really nice job.

But while testing this new feature in the CS5 prerelease beta I found that while you could select an area and then press the delete key to bring up the Fill dialog window, the use of the delete key would only work on the Background layer and not on any duplicate layers.

Strange right? This drove me nuts but…

There is a reason for this and it because you can’t “Delete” data from a Background layer to transparency, so that’s why the Fill dialog comes up. It just happens that Adobe lists Content-Aware as the first item in the drop down menu of the Fill window.

While you can use Edit > Fill… from the menu on duplicate layers, I wasn’t satisfied with that option so I decided to start pressing keystrokes to see if I could get the Fill dialog to come up on a duplicate layer. Well sure enough, if you press the Shift+delete key with a selection on a duplicate layer the Fill dialog will appear and you can simply press enter to activate the Content-Aware fill option.

I hope this little tip helps you out while using Content-Aware fill in your work!
